Tanzania and Rwanda Strengthen Their Cooperation
The 16th Session of the Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) between the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Rwanda officially concluded on July 26, 2025, in Kigali, following the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) by ministers from both countries. These agreements include one on agriculture and the establishment of a Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) liaison office in Kigali—steps aimed at strengthening close relations and promoting mutual development between the two nations.

The MoUs were signed by Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo (MP), and Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe. The goal is to foster strategic cooperation between Tanzania and Rwanda for the benefit of their citizens. Under the agricultural agreement, both parties aim to exchange experiences, technologies, expertise, and key information to enhance productivity, food security, and opportunities in agricultural trade.
Additionally, the establishment of the TPA office in Kigali aims to simplify access to port services in Rwanda, reduce the cost of goods, and strengthen the use of Tanzania's ports as the main gateway for Rwanda’s cargo and freight.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, Minister Kombo emphasized the importance of implementing all the agreements reached during the session. He urged government experts and officials to ensure that the JPC plans and resolutions are executed on time.
On his part, Minister Nduhungirehe commended Tanzania for its strong cooperation and stressed that Rwanda will continue to work closely with its neighbor to ensure genuine reconciliation is achieved through the implementation of the agreed resolutions. He noted that such agreements are vital tools for promoting economic growth, improving food security, and strengthening diplomatic and social solidarity between the two nations.
