EAC, Rwanda High Commission, members of the Rwandan community and other partners commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi
The People of the Republic of Rwanda, the East African Community and the International Community are this year commemorating for the 27th time the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
However, due to the prevalence of Covid-19 pandemic that has affected nations and lifestyles of people, leading to a new normal way of life, this year's commemoration had to take another mode as the East African Community (EAC) did not have a usual physical commemoration activity involving a big gathering of people.
In adherence to the “Kwibuka 27”guidelines from the Government of Rwanda and Covid-19 containment measures by the East African Community (EAC), a new commemoration mode was devised like last year where a group of few representatives from International Organizations and other partners in Arusha met in a social-distanced manner and laid wreaths of flowers at the Genocide Monument plaqued at the EAC Headquarters by the EAC HoS in 2014.
The event was presided over by the Arusha Regional Commissioner, Hon. Iddi Hassan Kimanta and present was the UN IRMCT Registrar, Mr. Aboubacar Tambadou, Justice Ore Sylvain, the President of ACPHR, representative of EALA Speaker, Rwanda High Commission, the Rwanda Diaspora Chairperson among other dignitaries.
This year's commemoration is under the Theme :Remember - Unite-Renew and will go on for a period of 100 days as lasted the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The High Commission is also organising another virtual commemoration event on 18th April that will bring together members of the Rwandan Community and other stakeholders to reflect on and remember the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
